Facebook is putting to test a new option called Highlight which will let people highlight their posts by paying a few extra dollars. Facebook’s intention behind the move is to gain some extra dollars. Because When you make an average status update on Facebook, just 12 percent of the people in your list are able see it. The Highlight app is being tested by only a few people right now but Facebook has also introduced a free version of the app to see if users are interested in using the Highlight feature at all or not.
Users can use the option and choose “important post” option and then click on “make sure friends see this” to make sure they actually do and their post doesn’t go ignored. However, the highlight will not change the color of the post but just highlight it in a way that makes people see it. The new feature allows paying through PayPal Visa, Mastercard and other services. Facebook’s move comes after it was revealed that the social networking site doesn’t make much money through mobile advertisements.
Facebook’s move of introducing the new feature seems a desperate attempt to please investors before the IPO. Investors will cheer as they will see the company making a move that will help it gain extra dollars but what is in it for the users? Nothing but expense. So far now, people have been using the social networking site for free and introducing a feature that allows some to gain an upper hand by paying for it will tick customers off. Many Facebook users are young users who are probably entering college or in high school; some are even younger than that. With no means to finance the new Highlight feature, these set of users will surely be turned off.
